Tips for Cleaning Your Shower

The shower in your home probably sees a lot of action, and in such a damp environment, it’s very easy for mould, mildew, dirt and grime to build up over time. If you want to thoroughly clean your shower like professional cleaners do then here are some tips to help you!

1)    Getting the right supplies.

For a proper and professional shower clean you’re going to need a few items. If you don’t already have them in your home, then don’t forget to add them to your shopping list! You’ll need: an old toothbrush, a bathroom cleaning spray, sponges, bicarbonate of soda, a plastic sandwich bag and white vinegar.


2)    Your showerhead, hose and fitting.

- Although you probably clean the base of your shower, not many people remember to clean the fitting itself, and you might be surprised by the gunk it can accumulate. Spray your old toothbrush with your bathroom cleaner and wet it slightly with clean water. Gently buff the dials, buttons, the underneath and the top of your shower fitting to remove any trapped dirt.

- Next, take your sandwich bag and fill it to about a quarter of the way with white vinegar. Put your shower head inside the bag and seal with an elastic band. Leave to sit for anywhere between fifteen and thirty minutes before rinsing clean. The white vinegar will help to shift limescale, remove dirt and keep your showerhead clean and sanitary!


- Use your toothbrush and white vinegar to gently scrub at your shower hose. The small brush will work wonders at lifting dirt from your hose, and in no time your shower fitting will look as good as new!

3)    Cleaning around your shower.

- Start by removing your shower curtain. Most shower curtains are made of plastic, which means that, although they can be washed in the washing machine, they shouldn’t be washed at more than 30 degrees. Try putting white vinegar into your washing machine instead of washing powder to get excellent results for your shower curtain.

- Did you know that bicarbonate of soda can work wonders to remove stains, mould and dirt from the grout in between your tiles? Make a paste by mixing bicarbonate of soda and water, and use this to buff at your grout and tiles. Leave to rest for ten minutes or so after giving your tiles a good scrub, and then rinse away to leave your tiles and grout looking as good as new!


- Next it’s time to clean your glass shower door if you have one. Use a glass cleaner, spray liberally and buff away in circular motions. If you have gunk or mould around your glass doors then take your toothbrush and give the areas a good scrub. You can use either your bicarbonate of soda mixture or your bathroom cleanser to do this.

4)    The final steps.

- You can finish off cleaning your shower by spraying your bathroom cleaner in and around your bath or the bottom of your shower (depending on your bathroom fixture) and giving it a good scrub with your sponges. Rinse clean, and make sure you’re removing any and all visible mess.


- Take a drain cleaner and, after removing any hair from your drain, follow the instructions on the bottle to leave your shower drain clean and clear!
